The gushing water as it comes out from the dam is relaxing, especially if you come from an area that does not have this amount of water moving down river. The dam is well lit at night and makes for interesting photos, if you are looking for something different.

Stop if your going thru The Dalles. Awesome experince and make sure you get the experience going across the bridge

I drove out to Dalles to visit the area. The day was beautiful and from the parking lot of the dam area I was able to take a picture of Mt. Hood. I enjoyed seeing the Dam. Although I was there on a Wednesday, and the visitor center is only open on the week-ends, I still enjoyed my visit. Its best to visit if you include it with seeing other things in Dalles area such as the excellent Discovery Museum.

Tours are only on weekends, but TV of fish ladder in the dam is in the visitor's bureau. You can drive across the bridge to get a view of the locks for the boats.

Traveling from Southern Idaho to the northern part of Washington State, we chose to take interstate through Northern Oregon and visit places along the way. We chose to make the Dalles Dam (& visitor center) our first stop. We arrived just as they were opening the doors (9am) so we had a quiet visit. More people started arriving about 9:30am.The visitor center is small but has a lot of information regarding everyone's feelings about the dam. There is a video about the dam as well as information panels about the dam from the eyes of many of the stakeholders: environmentalists, businesses, farmers, fishers, natives, recreationists, etc. It was interesting to see all the points of view. The Staff were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, we were informed that the tours listed on the website were wrong. There is no longer a train ride (exciting idea for our youngest) and that we would not be able to take any of the tours of the dam that day because seats were all reserved. Previously, we had 'accidentally' visited the Bonneville Dam (about 50 miles West of the Dalles Dam) and I would definitely recommend Bonneville to The Dalles. The quality and size of Bonneville compared to The Dalles is incredible. Skip The Dalles.

We enjoyed seeing the fish ladder and watching the fish jumping and swimming around. The below the damm visit was educational

Interesting educational experience for all. We had a family of 6 with two teenagers and 2 small children. All liked the dam tour. The tour times are 10am and 2pm which is different than the website. They have a free open cart shuttle that transports to the dam. The tour for this dam didn't descend 7 stories down like other reviews stated, however it is still worth the tour. At the end we were able to see sturgeon fish...which are amazing!!

Beautiful back drop off the bridge. But as with most dams, do not have tours anymore. Can see some old fishing grounds along the bank

The train ride and fish ladder are highlights. Beautiful views of the gorge at the Dalles. The train ride is unique to this Dam and certainly adds to the experience.

Obviously the dam is at the Dalles and it is a pretty big one also. We also Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River - a lot of it is to help the salmon get through the river to their spawing grounds!

The history is interesting but the highlight is going down seven stories inside the dam and watching the salmon and other speices of fish swim by a large glass wall.
